Spring has officially sprung, and here at Unique Senior Care

Addressing Mobility Issues In The Elderly

Spring has officially sprung, and here at Unique Senior Care we’re looking forward to sunny walks, picnics and day trips with our clients. It’s the perfect time to get out and about; however, if an elderly member of your family has mobility issues, spontaneous days out aren’t as simple as they used to be. But don’t let this dissuade you – or them – as venturing outside the house has been proven to have a number of physical and mental health benefits.

With careful planning you can organise a memorable day for the whole family. Here are some things to consider before you embark on your spring adventure:

Accessibility – Research the accessibility of your potential destination beforehand, for example, seeing if there are lifts available for a loved one who struggles with mobility. Destinations such as National Trust properties often have this information on their websites.

Weather – Be prepared for anything the great British weather can throw at you – pop your brollies and raincoats in your boot, just in case. And don’t forget your hat and factor 30 if the sun looks likely to make a rare appearance.

Travel – If your elderly relative can’t get around like they used to then driving to your chosen destination is probably the easiest option, rather than public transport. They may even be entitled to a Blue Badge, which allows people with mobility issues to park closer to their destination.

On-site facilities – Check the food, drink and toilet facilities at your destination to avoid getting caught out. Most attractions have a café, but we recommend taking some food with you in case of unexpected closures. And if your loved one has complicated dietary requirements, taking a picnic might be the best option.

Take a break – Plan carefully to make sure the day out won’t be too overwhelming, and factor in plenty of coffee breaks. Remember to take lots of water, too! Lastly, if you wish to walk a long distance, you could look into pre-booking a wheelchair for your loved one.

Our Companionship and Transportation services

At Unique Senior Care, we strongly believe that elderly people shouldn’t miss out on the gorgeous spring weather due to mobility limitations – we can therefore provide transport and trips out in the sunshine for the client and carer to attend together.

This forms an important part of our Companionship service, which we believe is vital as older people are especially vulnerable to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Find out more about our Companionship Care service here and our Transportation service here.
