What Does a Care Assistant Do?

As a senior care assistant in Solihull, your role will definitely be varied. No two clients are the same and individual needs can change all the time.  That said, typical responsibilities will include:

Personalised care: Providing personalised care and assistance with daily living activities, such as helping to bathe, getting dressed and ready for the day ahead or settling down at night and helping with toileting and any medication.

Enriching companionship: Offering companionship, a friendly ear and a chat or maybe engaging in tasks together can often make the biggest difference to clients well being. 

Comfortable living: Performing light physical household duties where our clients are often struggling, such as meal preparation, laundry, and light cleaning.

Monitoring health: A constant pair of eyes and eyes our Warwickshire carers are well placed to monitor and report any changes in physical or mental health with the wider team and family.

Collaborative care: As a Unique Senior Care Caregiver you will be part of a wider community team, we often work alongside District Nurses, therapists, and other professionals to deliver a professional circle of support around our clients.

Flexibility and Working Hours

We recognise that everyone has different needs and schedules. We strive to accommodate the varied and unique needs of our clients while also considering the flexibility required by our care assistants.

Flexible Scheduling: Many of our care visits are planned during the key hours of 7:00-10:00 AM and 6:00-10:00 PM. However, due to the varied needs of our clients, we provide care throughout the day.

This allows us to offer roles that are adaptable to other commitments you may have, whether you are studying, caring for your family, or balancing other jobs.

Building Your Schedule: We work with you to create a schedule that fits around your life, offering part-time or full-time hours that match your availability.

While we can't always guarantee set hours, we make every effort to provide consistent and regular shifts to all our team members.

Hourly Commitment: All care visits are at least one hour long, ensuring you have sufficient time to provide high-quality care and truly connect with clients.

This commitment to unhurried, personalised care supports the well-being of our clients and enriches the caregiving experience. Not every provider does this.

The Hiring Process for Our Home Care Jobs 

Joining Unique Care means becoming part of a team dedicated to providing excellent care and support. Here’s what you can expect from our hiring process:

    Initial Screening:

    After you submit your online application, a member of our recruitment team will review it to ensure that your skills and experience meet the role's requirements.

    If your application is successful, you will be invited for an initial telephone interview to further discuss your qualifications and interest in the role.

    Face-to-Face Interview:

    If the phone interview goes well, you will be invited to our office for an in-person interview with a Registered Manager or a Senior Member of our team.

    This interview typically lasts about 45 minutes to an hour and includes values and competency-based questions. This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the role and ask any questions you may have.

  • 3

    Post-Interview Feedback:

    We value timely communication, so you can expect to receive feedback within 24 hours after your interview. If you are selected to move forward, the next steps will be outlined for you.

    E-Learning and Induction:

    Successful candidates will then be invited to complete our e-learning modules. Following this, you’ll attend a comprehensive three-day face-to-face induction to fully prepare you for your responsibilities.

    Meet and Greet:

    After completing your initial training, you’ll have a meet and greet with your manager. This is a great chance to get acquainted with your team and the work environment, ensuring a smooth transition into your new role.

    Onboarding:

    Once all steps are successfully completed, you will be formally welcomed aboard. We will support you through every step of your integration into our team, ensuring you have all the tools and knowledge needed to thrive.

FAQs and Helpful Resources

The process from your initial application to going into placement generally takes a few weeks. This is so we can ensure all DBS and compliance checks are complete and that you can finish all the necessary training. The more proactive you can be with providing your documentation via our onboarding portal, the smoother and faster this process will be.

This is largely dependent on your availability and the clients needing care in your area at the time. It’s worth noting that if you’re looking for full-time hours, these may build gradually over the first couple of months while we assign new clients to your schedule.

We do ask that all our caregivers work alternate weekends so that it is fair for everyone. If your availability changes at any time, please let us know in good time so we can rework the rota.

As well as the training mentioned above, you’ll have access to ongoing support from your senior team and will attend refresher training to ensure your skills align with up-to-date best practices. You’ll also have chance to attend specialist courses such as dementia or end-of-life training during your career, should you wish.

Always let your supervisor know if there’s something you’d like to learn, or if you need further support in any areas. We actively promote continuous learning and we’re keen to help our team grow from within.

When working with vulnerable adults, it's crucial to adhere to CQC guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those in our care. Part of this involves knowing the character and competence of our staff, which is where references come in.

If traditional employment references aren't available, we welcome character references from professionals you know, like a tutor, doctor, solicitor, police officer, company director, or business owner.

The DBS check is typically back within two weeks, but it can take longer for a number of reasons, such as if you’ve had any name changes or the number of addresses you’ve lived at.

You need an updated DBS check when joining as, while unlikely, we need to be 100% sure that you haven’t had any criminal convictions since leaving your previous job.

If you’re on the Update Service then we are able to access your records without a new application. Just share your DBS Certificate number and a copy of your certificate with us so we can get an updated report.  

Your job will involve driving between multiple clients which means that its necessary for you to have business motor insurance.

It also means that you’ll be covered for taking your clients on companionship calls which is beneficial for both them and you.

Yes, personal care is a really important part of your role and is key in maintaining a client’s dignity. If you’re new to care, it’s understandable that these tasks may seem daunting but you will be fully trained to handle these responsibilities.

The reason we don’t offer calls solely for companionship comes down to empathy. If you were with a client and they happened to have an accident, would you feel comfortable leaving them without support? We provide rounded care, so we’d want you to feel comfortable knowing you were able to help.

We're all human, and it's natural to have different personalities, likes, and dislikes.

Although we do our best to pair you with compatible clients, there may be rare occasions where the fit isn't quite right. In such instances, we'll work closely with you to understand the situation, considering factors like the client's perspective and any specific events that led to the mismatch.

Our goal is always to ensure a positive environment for both you and the client. If a resolution isn't possible, we'll find a more suitable match for you, ensuring both you and the client feel comfortable and supported.
