Being a Caregiver is all about making a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. Whether it’s providing essential care or simply brightening someone’s day, Caregivers play an invaluable role in supporting the wellbeing and independence of their clients. To offer a better insight into what it’s really like, we spoke with Emma-Jayne Hall. She has dedicated the past seven years to her role as a Caregiver. Emma-Jayne shared her experiences, what keeps her passionate about the job, and why she believes caregiving is one of the most rewarding careers you can have.
What’s your name and how long have you been working as a Caregiver?
Hi, I’m Emma-Jayne Hall, and I’ve been working as a carer for seven years now. Over those years, I’ve supported a wide range of clients and have gained so much experience—it’s been such a rewarding role for me.
What inspired you to become a Caregiver?
For me, it’s always been about making a difference. I’ve always had a caring nature and knew that I wanted a job where I could help people. Becoming a Caregiver felt like the perfect way to do that. Knowing I can brighten someone’s day, support them to stay independent, and make life a little easier for them is really important to me.
What does a typical day as a Caregiver look like?
A typical day involves visiting my clients to support them with their daily needs. I help with personal care—things like helping them wash and get dressed in the morning. I also assist with meals, making sure they’re eating well and staying healthy. But it’s not just about physical tasks. A big part of my role is also providing companionship. This could be sitting down for a chat or simply being there if they need someone to talk to. Every client is different, so every day is a bit different too, but my focus is always on supporting them in a way that helps them feel confident and independent.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a Caregiver?
The most rewarding part for me is seeing the difference I can make. Whether it’s helping someone feel comfortable or just bringing a smile to their face, those little moments are what makes the job so special. It’s a privilege to be part of someone’s life and to know that I’ve made their day better, even if it’s in small ways. I also really enjoy the relationships I’ve built with my clients. It’s rewarding to know I’ve earned their trust and can help them feel safe and cared for.
What kind of training and support do you receive?
We’re really well supported at Unique. I have regular one-to-ones with my manager, and the whole team is always there to help if I have any questions or need advice. We also get lots of opportunities for training. I’ve taken part in training for dementia care, end-of-life care. We also have yearly refresher courses to make sure our skills stay up to date. The support and training mean I always feel confident in my role and ready to handle whatever comes up.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in care?
I’d say go for it! It’s honestly the most rewarding job you can do. Every day is different, and you get to make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s challenging at times, but when you see how much your support means to someone, it’s all worth it. If you’re someone who cares about others and wants to help people live more independently, I can’t think of a better career to choose.
